Anything else you'd like voters to know about you?
Avid vintage sports car and antique auto buff.

1) Why are you running for office?
Although every politician running for office, incumbent or not, indicates that public school education and education in general is one of their top priorities, results do not seem to change even with continual increased funding. Perhaps real changes on the BOE could redirect efforts for better results. Incumbent has served beyond ability to deliver innovative changes necessary for better results.

2) How should the DOE deal with budget cuts? Where should reductions occur?
Top heavy and duplicated administrative rules and procedures have loaded down the local school administrators and teachers with too much paperwork and little time to teach. Hire local district support and downsize the central bureaucracy to better streamline necessary functions without duplication. Centralize only payroll and standards guidelines for accountability and transparency.

3) How should the DOE modify its school funding formula to more fairly distribute money to schools?
Weighted student formula will not address the necessity for equal delivery of eductional opportunities Statewide, including rural areas. Replace this with equal funding for core programs, then differences for school population such as non-english speaking challenges and the rest equally delivered, based upon student deficits. Fund more in the classroom rather than supporting duplicated processes.

4) How should a teacher drug-testing program be administered and funded?
Public trust and student safety requires zero tolerance and it "trumps" the civil liberties argument. DOE must implement random, routine, and fair testing in hiring, administrating and managing teachers and staff. DOE must make this a part of it's budget regardless of how and where it is funded from. Adult habits set the stardards for students to model. There should be no exceptions to safety.

5) How many children do you have, and did they attend public or private school?
My family has attended local private schools over the last 100 years. All my grandchildren have and currently attend public schools. Our family advocates, volunteers and supports in their education in an effort to fix the system rather than avoid it any longer. Equal educational opportunities must include basics as well as addressing work force development skills for all students.

6) What's the No. 1 initiative you would pursue in 2009?
Promote proven public school model from mainland successes that will lead the way to better student results, streamlined operations and more effective use of funding. Support efforts for a con-con to address standards, accountability and county-level funding opportunities with changes in the State constitution. Refocus BOE and DOE objectives to serving the students rather than the system.
