Samuel Northrup Castle, outstanding Honolulu business, political and educational leader, and founder of one of Hawai'i's Big Five companies, came to Hawai'i in 1837 with the Eighth Company of American missionaries.

He and his bride of one year, Angeline Tenney Castle, had one daughter. Castle busied himself as assistant superintendent of secular affairs for Honolulu's Protestant mission.

In 1851, he left the mission to go into partnership with Amos Starr Cooke. The two set up a general store, Castle & Cooke, that, under the guidance of the two missionaries would over time expand to become an important sugar company and one of Hawai'i's leading businesses.

Meanwhile, Castle, who had established himself as a shrewd businessman, kept busy with other pursuits. For 20 years he was a member of the Privy Council, and for three sessions a member of the House of Nobles.

In addition, Castle served in the Legislature in the mid-1860s, and for four decades he was a Punahou School treasurer and trustee.

When Castle's wife, Angeline, died, the missionary-turned-businessman sailed to Boston, where he married Angeline's sister, Mary Tenney. The couple returned to Hawai'i, where they raised 10 children.
