Wartime currency

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

In the uncertain days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, thousands of anxious Island residents began hoarding food, supplies and, of course, money.

Fearful that an invasion could find these stores of U.S. currency in Japanese hands, the government made it illegal for individuals to possess more than $200 in cash ($500 for businesses). Residents dutifully turned in some $200 million in cash and securities, which was collectively burned first at Nuuanu Mortuary and later at the better-equipped 'Aiea Sugar Plantation mill.

The government replaced the money with specially printed wartime currency good only in Hawai'i and certain other U.S. territories.

The bills had the word "Hawaii" printed once in large letters on the back, and twice in smaller type on the front.

Restriction on the use of Hawai'i currency was lifted in April 1944. Two years later, the bills were withdrawn and replaced with normal currency.
