Regional youth soccer meeting in Waikiki next year

United States Youth Soccer will hold its Region 4 planning conference in Hawaii next year, according to Hawaii Youth Soccer Association president Scott Keopuhiwa.

The conference, officially called the USYS Region 4 Adidas Fall Planning Conference and Workshop, will be Oct. 18-20, 2002.

More than 200 soccer administrators from 14 state associations will attend the meeting, with each state association sending between 10 and 20 representatives to the conference. Meetings will be in Waikiki, although the site hasn't been determined, Keopuhiwa said.

Perhaps the most important part of the conference is the Region 4 council meeting, Keopuhiwa said. That is a meeting of the presidents of each of the associations, plus the regional staff — the director, deputy director, secretary and treasurer.

"This is the first council meeting of the seasonal year; policies and budgets for the year are often set at this meeting," Keopuhiwa said.

In addition, workshops are held for various committees, with representatives from each state attending. Committees on state championships, referees, risk management and registrars are among those that will gather for this conference.

USYS is the nation’s largest youth soccer organization, with some 3 million registered players across the nation. Region 4 consists of 14 state organizations from 13 states: Alaska, Alabama, California-North; California-South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

"One of the really good things about having it here is that HYSA will be able to send representatives to all of the workshops," Keopuhiwa said. "Usually we can only afford to send 10, sometimes 11, to the regional meeting."

Keopuhiwa said that Hawaii has also put in a bid to play host to the national USYS conference in 2005.
