Nash Subotic scored 32 points as Hawaii Pacific University defeated Alaska-Fairbanks, 87-53, in a Pacific West Conference basketball game last night at Blaisdell Arena.
HPU jumped to a 44-29 lead at the half.
Subotic shot a blistering 12-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Nick Spajic added 20 points and Michael Paul 10 for HPU (10-13 overall, 5-9 PacWest).
Bogdan Popescu led Fairbanks (6-16, 5-8) with 29 points. Fairbanks lost despite outrebounding HPU, 18-16.
MORE BASKETBALL
Alaska-Anchorage 100, BYUH 86: Ed Kirk scored 24 points and Taylor Wagner 22 to lead Alaska-Anchorage at Laie. The win improved PacWest- leading Alaska-Anchorage to 15-7, 9-4. Brigham Young-Hawaii fell to 13-10, 7-7.
Kerry Hendrickson led BYUH with 29 points.
TOP ATHLETE
Hilo guard selected: University of Hawaii-Hilo basketball guard Scott Prather has been recognized as the January Big Island Athlete of the Month for leading the Vulcans to six straight home wins last month.
Prather topped a dozen other nominees to claim the monthly athletic award sponsored by Dons Grill in Hilo. Prather is a third-year junior starter at Hilo.
FISHING
One class filled: The International Game Fish Association announced a new Hawaii line class record on 4-pound test line. Kilaueas Jack N. Gushiken caught a 4-pound, 7-ounce butterfly peacock bass with light tackle on Sept. 30, filling the vacant line class record.

GOLF
Players qualify: Hee-Won Han and Jody Niemann both qualified for the 16th Annual Cup Noodles Ladies Open yesterday, finishing with 3-under par 69s. The $750,000 tournament starts Thursday at Kapolei golf course.
CORRECTION
Linescores out of line: Tascha Berinobis and Holly Garcia play softball for Hawaii Pacific. Linescores in yesterdays Advertiser from HPUs doubleheader sweep of Chaminade on Sunday placed Berinobis and Garcia on the wrong team. The linescores also failed to include back-to-back home runs in the first game by HPUs Kristin Fujii and Berinobis. The homers came in the top of the eighth; Fujiis blast snapped a 1-1 tie.
