More than 250 teams from 13 states will converge in Honolulu in 2003 when the Region IV tournament of United States Youth Soccer is played at the Waipio Soccer Park.
Hawaii Youth Soccer Association president Scott Keopuhiwa said Honolulu was awarded the tournament at a regional council meeting yesterday in Las Vegas.
Michelle Schreiner, who presented the bid at the council meeting, said a big selling point for Hawaii was the new soccer complex, which has 19 regulation-sized fields, including a lighted stadium that will seat around 3,000.
Scheiner said the tournament could bring as much as $10 to $12 million in revenue to the Hawaii economy.
