Academy of Arts organizes 'safari' to mark black history

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol
Advertiser Staff Writer

Would you like to know how an African rattle is made? Or maybe check out a display of African musical instruments?

In honor of Black History Month, the Honolulu Academy of Arts will hold an African Cultural Safari from 1 to 4:30 p.m. next Sunday.

The event, designed for children ages 6 to 12, will feature African dance groups, storytelling, videos of African myths, and refreshments.

For a nominal fee, children will be able to dress up in articles of traditional African clothing and have their pictures taken.

The program is free for Honolulu Academy of Arts members and children ages 12 and under; admission is $1 for all others. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult.

The African Cultural Safari is presented in cooperation with the Hawaii Chapter of Links Inc., an organization that focuses on promoting educational and cultural programs for and about African Americans.

For information, call 532-8700.
