Hawaii Public Radios music director Alan Bunin, 49, died of a heart attack yesterday morning while attending a national public radio conference in Tucson, Ariz.
Bunin had been HPRs music director for the past 10 years.
Listeners would hear him as host of Honolulu broadcasts, including a daily "Morning Concert" program during which he illuminated classical music.
Bunin also participated in other music-appreciation activities, such as accompanying patrons to hear the Bang on a Can All-Stars concert last year, and conducting public discussions of various musical forms. He played as a violist for the Maui Symphony.
Hawaii Public Radio and general manager Michael Titterton said Bunin was attending the Public Radio Music Directors conference in Tucson when the heart attack struck. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
"We know the public radio family will gather to help his wife Helen and daughter Natasha, and we also know his devoted listeners and all who knew him will be as shocked as we are at this news," Titterton said.
Services are pending.
