Students to celebrate Big Island Youth Day

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawaii — Hundreds of high school students are convening at St. Joseph High School in Hilo this weekend to celebrate Big Island Youth Day 2001.

Activities include sports, a youth Mass, dance, talent show, candlelight prayer service and the culmination of a service project that has been months in the making.

The students held school rallies and appealed to the community to collect soap, toothbrushes and other items for personal-care kits, along with blankets, tissue, Bibles and backpacks.

The response was so huge that the Hawaii Island Food Bank was to be called in to help store the donations, said event spokesman George Hotniansky. The event is sponsored by local Catholic churches and open to all Big Island high school students.
