Three cheers for Kamehameha's pep squad

Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha, fresh from a fourth-place finish at a large national competition last weekend, won the first Interscholastic League of Honolulu varsity Pep Squad championship yesterday at Kekuhaupio Gym.

Punahou won the junior varsity championship.

Kamehameha started its routine to the music of Israel Kamakawiwoole and "Hawaii 78".

"It was a chicken-skin opening," coach Dolly Wong said. "The judges remarked on our tight, clean lines and said our routines were powerful," she said.

Kamehameha’s 11-member, all-girl squad includes four freshmen and just two seniors.

Hawaii Baptist and Punahou were the only other teams that competed in varsity.

"It was great for the teams that actually did this," Wong said. "I hope all the rest of them will enter next year." Two teams that had entered dropped out yesterday because of injuries.

BOYS BASKETBALL

State tournament: Unbeaten Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalaheo (13-0) is expected to receive the No. 1 seed when the tournament committee meets today to set the schedule for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association boys basketball championships.

Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Iolani, Maui champion Baldwin and Big Island champion Honokaa will receive the other seeds, which gives them a free pass through the opening round on Wednesday into Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The other schools in the 12- team tournament are Kauai champion Kapaa, Punahou and St. Louis of the ILH; Mililani, Leilehua and Kahuku of the OIA; Baldwin of Maui and Waiakea of the Big Island.

The full schedule will be published in Tuesday’s High School report in The Advertiser.

Games will be played at McKinley High and McCabe Gym on Wednesday and Thursday and at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center on Friday and Saturday.

Hilo did not qualify to defend its state championship. St. Louis was runner-up last season.
