Hospital Point being renovated

Housing renovation is under way in Hospital Point, site of 19 officers’ residences built between 1915 and 1944. The contractor is working with the State Historic Preservation Office to retain original features where possible. The project will be conducted in stages and completed in 2002.

A renovation of 190 units in the Hokulani community has been completed in a process that began in 1999. The two-, three- and four -bedroom units are allotted to junior enlisted families.

The apartments were renovated inside and out, some to improve accessibility to people with disabilities. Energy-efficient air-conditioning and solar water heating have been added, and electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems have been replaced. Termite control measures were incorporated.

More than 318 new homes in the adjacent Hale Moku community have also been razed and replaced.

MARINES

Students learn while camping

More than 140 students took part in a weekend campout on Kaneohe Marine base as part of an environmental program involving lectures, field trips and service projects.

The Marine Corps Base Hawaii Environmental Department was host to the Sierra Club’s High School Hikers Ecology Camp at Hale Koa Beach from Saturday through today.

On base, the students studied sea birds, reefs and archaeology sites on the Mokapu Peninsula. They toured Kawai Nui Marsh and Heeia Fishpond.

The Sierra Club program has held the ecology camp for nearly 30 years.

PACIFIC COMMAND

Headquarters to break ground

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new U.S. Pacific Command headquarters, to be named the Nimitz-MacArthur Pacific Command Center, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The naming - in honor of Adm. Chester W. Nimitz and Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the first commanders of joint area commands in the Pacific - reflects the joint military relationship of all U.S. military forces in the region.

The new headquarters will replace World War II-era buildings and consolidate Pacific Command and Special Operations personnel in a six-story, 274,500-square-foot structure. Construction is to be complete in 2003.

The existing headquarters will be renovated and used as headquarters for Marine Forces Pacific and other Pacific Command support activities.
