QB Club honors its award winners

Kahuku High football coach Siuaki Livai was named the George Archer Coach of the Year at the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s 54th annual Banquet of Champions last night at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Livai, who led the Red Raiders to the state championship, was one of 12 award winners who were recognized for their accomplishments during the year 2000.

The Quarterback Club also honored Olympians from Hawaii who participated in the 2000 Sydney Games, as well as national championship winners, which included Brigham Young-Hawaii’s women’s tennis team and Hawaii Pacific’s women’s volleyball team.

Last night’s award winners:

2000 Prep Male Athlete of the Year-Apana Nakayama, Molokai High School.

2000 Prep Female Athlete of the Year-Milia Macfarlane, Punahou School.

2000 Adult Male Athlete of the Year-Sunny Garcia, professional surfer.

2000 Adult Female Athlete of the Year-Lily Kahumoku, UH Wahine volleyball.

2000 Senior Male Athlete of the Year-Michael Dudock, track, swimming and diving.

2000 Senior Female Athlete of the Year-Diane Stowell, swimming.

2000 Neal Shaw Blaisdell Award-Allen Richardson, MD, Olympics and UH Wahine physician.

2000 Scotty Schuman Award-Edwin S.N. Wong, Na Koa President.

2000 Joe Reynolds Award-Paul Durham.

2000 George Archer Coach of the Year Award-Siuaki Livai, Kahuku High School football coach.

Male Sports Person of the Year-Siuaki Livai, Kahuku High School football coach.

Female Sports Person of the Year-Tita Ahuna, HPU women's volleyball coach.

Special Award-Bobo Olson, professional boxer.


BASKETBALL

UH-Hilo, Chaminade win: Jason Shumate scored 19 points, hitting 8 of 9 shots from the field, as University of Hawaii-Hilo edged Brigham Young-Hawaii, 86-84, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at Laie.

Scott Prather added 17 points for UH-Hilo, which improved to 16-10 overall and 11-6 in the PacWest.

Kerry Hendrickson had 17 points and 11 rebounds for BYUH (14-12, 8-9). Adam Evans added 16 points.

In another PacWest game, David Toya scored 26 points as Chaminade nudged Hawaii Pacific, 62-61.

Nick Spajic led HPU with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Chaminade is 15-11 and 9-8; HPU is 10-16 and 5-12.


BASEBALL

TCU shuts out UHH: Chad Durham and Stan Newton combined on a five-hitter as Texas Christian routed Hawaii-Hilo, 12-0, to complete a three-game sweep in Western Athletic Conference baseball yesterday at Fort Worth, Texas.

Durham (2-0) allowed four hits and one walk in seven innings, while striking out five. Newton allowed a hit in the final two innings.

Two errors sparked a six-run third inning for the Horned Frogs (7-5, 3-0 WAC).

The Vulcans dropped to 3-11 and 2-4.

The road trip doesn’t get any easier for the Vulcans, who begin a three-game series against nationally ranked Rice (10-1, 0-0) starting Thursday at Reckling Park in Houston.

The Owls are ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and No. 6 by Baseball America magazine.


SURFING

Pros at the Pipe: World champion Sunny Garcia leads the list of top surfers expected to participate in the Hawaiian Island Creations Pipeline Pro, which begins its holding period today.

The contest will run on the three best days at the Banzai Pipeline between today and March 4.

The event is part of surfing’s World Qualifying Series, and will award a $20,000 prize purse.
