WAIMEA, Hawaii Parker Ranch Foundation Trust has transferred a 9.8-acre parcel valued at $1.5 million to North Hawaii Community Hospital.
The transfer, plus $500,000 in cash, was part of a pledge that Parker Ranch owner Richard Smart made to the hospital before his death in 1992.
"We have plans to expand our facilities by building more physician offices, a Wellness Center, and other health care-related buildings that will enable us to fulfill the dreams of Richard Smart," said John McNeal, chief executive of North Hawaii Community Hospital.
Mel Hewitt, a trustee for the Parker Ranch Foundation, said the deal will give the hospital more flexibility to serve Waimea and other Big Island residents.
"The additional land will be a part of their upcoming multimillion-dollar medical campus expansion plan that will provide the flexibility and growth for the hospital," he said.
Smart helped pay for the development of the Lucy Henriques Medical Center that was merged with the North Hawaii Community Hospital in 1999.
Parker Ranch is one of the largest and most historic ranches in the United States. Its foundation benefits the Hawaii Preparatory Accademy, Parker School and Hawaii Community Foundation.
