Tournament schedule

Baldwin could not commit a foul when it really needed it. And when it finally got one, it was too late.

William Broadus Jr. sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds left as Mililani rallied from a six-point deficit to beat Baldwin, 42-41, in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines State Basketball Championships last night at McCabe Gym.

Mililani (18-6) will play third-seeded Honokaa (22-3) in a quarterfinal at 6 tonight at McCabe.

Baldwin (18-11) took a 41-40 lead with 10 seconds left on Alika Amasiu’s driving layup. After two timeouts, the last with 7.3 seconds left, Mililani inbounded at about half way behind midcourt to Broadus, who dashed through defenders before finding a temporary opening through the right side. He considered going for a layup, but put on a spin move and tried to pull up for a short jumper, but was fouled by Amasiu.

"I was just trying to block out that crowd from making all that racket, so I just had to concentrate," Broadus said of his ensuing free-throw attempts.

His first shot bounced on the the back of the rim twice before falling through the net. After a Baldwin timeout, Broadus made his second shot.

"We wanted to set some screens on top, get him free because he’s a good one-on-one player," Mililani coach Mike Coito said. "We had to depend on the talent."

Baldwin coach Wayne Gushiken said his players tried to foul Broadus en route to the basket, but no avail.

"We had three more fouls to give before they could put up a shot," Gushiken said. "It looked like he got fouled twice going down the lane, but they didn’t call it."

The Bears called time following Broadus’ second free throw to set up a final shot, but Hoku Patoc intercepted Brandon Ahonima’s three-quarter-court pass.

Baldwin led 35-29 early in the fourth period. The Trojans chipped away, eventually taking a 38-37 lead on Kaipo Patoc’s 3-pointer with three minutes left.

Ahonima’s basket with 2:34 left gave Baldwin a 39-38 lead, but that advantage disappeared with 48 seconds left when Hoku Patoc scored on a layup after taking a pass from Rashaun Broadus.

The Bears regained the lead at 41-40 lead on Amasiu’s layup with 10 seconds left.

"It wasn’t easy," Coito said. "I hope we have something left in the tank."

Leilehua 70, Kapaa 49: The Mules’ athleticism overcame their 17-for-37 free-throw shooting against the Warriors (12-7) at McCabe.

The Mules (18-5) will play second-seeded Iolani (19-4) at 7:30 tonight at McCabe.

"If we don’t hit free throws tomorrow, we don’t win," Leilehua coach Keith Spencer said. "Tonight, I don’t know why. Perhaps the pressure of being in the state tournament. I tried to be patient with that but I’ll tell them if we don’t make a free throw, we might not even be in the game (against Iolani)."

The Mules’ athleticism enabled them to force 12 turnovers and position themselves for 36 rebounds against a team with a slight height advantage.

They can’t afford to miss their free throws against the Raiders, who are taller than Kapaa and perhaps just as athletic as the Mules. But questionable for Iolani is guard Bronson Melemai. Raiders’ coach Mark Mugiishi, who was watching last night’s games, said Melemai missed school yesterday because of the flu. He must attend classes today to play, Mugiishi said.

Kapaa showed its spunk, taking a 12-10 lead with 3:08 left in the first quarter.
