Kaloi, Wojnarowicz win national tennis titles

Wahiawa’s Heidi Kaloi won two titles and Kaneohe’s Michael Wojnarowicz a singles title at the National Open Championships for 16s and 18s.

The U.S. Tennis Association event ended Monday at Kapalua Tennis Garden.

Kaloi, unseeded in her first 16s tournament, upset top-seeded Serena Fermin from California, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, in the final. Kaloi then teamed with Chloe Bihag of Ewa Beach to win the doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, over Fermin and Taylynn Snyder, who were seeded first.

Wojnarowicz captured the Boys 18 title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over second-seeded Matthew Loucks of California. Wojnarowicz, who was not seeded, also upset the fourth seed.

Honolulu’s Chris Lam, seeded third, finished third with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ricky Butenko. Lam and Butenko captured the doubles championship, 6-4, 6-0, over Garret Leight and Garrett Snyder.

Honolulu’s Tracie Ann Chong won her third-place match in the Girls 18, overcoming Emily De Camilla, 6-3, 6-0. Chong was beaten by top-seeded Arpi Kojian in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2.

Honolulu’s Stephen Conching took fourth in Boys 16s, falling to Treat Huey of Virginia, 6-3, 6-0.

In the Boys 16s doubles final, top-seeded Andrew Diefenback and Chris Rasmussen swept Derrick Lajola of Aiea and Jamie Migia of Honolulu, 6-1, 7-5. Lajola and Migia were seeded third, and upset the second seeds in the semifinals.

There were 140 players in the event.


BASEBALL

’Bows rained out: Yesterday’s baseball game between the University of Hawaii and host Sacramento State was postponed because of rain.

The game is scheduled to be made up at noon today, Hawaii time, and will be broadcast live on KCCN AM 1420.

UH spokesman Markus Owens said if today’s makeup cannot be played, it will not be made up.

The Rainbows have a three-game Western Athletic Conference series Saturday through Monday at Fresno State.


SOFTBALL

Alumnae ready: Sixteen former players will return for the annual Hawaii Wahine-Alumnae softball game, 5 p.m. Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Wahine (10-6) are coming off a second-place finish in their Chevron Paradise Classic. They don’t play until March 6, a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against Loyola Marymount.

Former Wahine schedule to play in the alumnae game are: Kehau (Cofran) Aina, Rose Antonio, Nanci (Morelock) Coolen, Joyce Lum, Danelle Haia, Dawn Hirayama, Cheyene (Thompson) Hoshino, Kelley Hupp, Joyce (Antonio) Ikehara, Tracy Loo, Aiko Okamura, Tamara Kaluau, Richlyn Tada, Chris Viernes, Dee Wisneski and Nani (Sua) Vegas.

Punahou’s Chew: Kenneth Chew is coach of the Punahou School swimming teams. His last name was misspelled in Wednesday’s Advertiser.
