Two-time state girls basketball Player of the Year Brandy Richardson, who moved to California last summer but moved back a few weeks later, is leaving Oahu again.
But this time she is just going to Maui for the weekend, where the Kalaheo girls will open their season in the third annual Maui Wahine Basketball Tournament at Maui High School.
Kalaheo, state runner-up to Kamehameha last year, is the headliner in a field that includes host Maui, Hilo, Lahainaluna, Baldwin, Campbell, St. Anthony and Iolani.
Tip-off times are from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, tomorrow and Saturday. The championship game is Saturday at 8 p.m.
Assistants will coach Kalaheo because head coach Chico Furtado is also associate head coach of the Mustangs boys team, which is playing in the state tournament.
Also on Oahu, two-time defending girls state champion Kamehameha opens its season at Nanakuli tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Warriors have won 29 in a row since the 1999 season.
Nanakuli, led by the versatile Maricris Sierra, warms up for the Warriors by playing at Kahuku at 7 tonight.
Punahou, which has 10 players including four starters back from the team that finished third in the state last year, will be host to the Punahou Wahine Basketball Classic today through Saturday at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Roosevelt, Moanalua, Aiea, Seabury Hall and Punahous Division II squad are the other teams. It is not a tournament; each team plays three of the other five.
