The average price of a one-way, 1,000-mile U.S. airline ticket rose 4.1 percent to $146.51 in January from the year-earlier month, the Air Transport Association said.
The report is compiled from prices paid by consumers and provided by major U.S. airlines to the lobbying and trade group. The information doesnt include data from Southwest Airlines Co., the largest low-fare carrier, and also excludes aviation taxes, the Washington-based group said.
The average cost of a coach seat rose 3.6 percent in January to $132.24, while the average first-class ticket increased 5.3 percent to $253.20, according to the ATA, which represents 23 U.S. and five international carriers.
U.S. airlines increased fares at least six times in 2000, primarily for business tickets and usually citing higher jet-fuel prices as the reason. The average price in 2000 for jet fuel for delivery in New York harbor climbed 76 percent from the previous year.
