NORTH SHORE

Surf expected to get bigger

Surf along the North Shore is expected to increase from 3 to 4 feet this morning to heights of 10 to 12 feet by tonight.

The National Weather Service predicted that surf would remain high throughout the weekend, diminishing on Monday, then possibly rise to more than 10 feet on Tuesday.

Surf along the Waianae Coast will be slightly smaller.

Beachgoers should exercise caution and speak with lifeguards if they plan to enter the ocean.

Rotarians will repair cabins

Twenty-five members of the Rotary Club of Waikiki will repair the weather-damaged makai cabins at YMCA Camp Erdman in Waialua tomorrow.

The project is part of the Weinberg Friends Program of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

By conducting the project, the Rotary Club not only helps Camp Erdman, but is allowed to designate a charity of its choice, and the Weinberg Foundation will contribute $10,000 to that charity.

The club has designated Angel Network Charities Inc. as its recipient. The organization shelters, guides and restores homeless families.

Camp Erdman serves 22,000 children and adults annually in a variety of educational and recreational programs.

LEEWARD

Nanakuli fire no accident

An early-morning fire yesterday that caused an estimated $60,000 in damage to a vacant Nanakuli house was deliberately set, a fire official said.

Arson investigators have taken over the case at 87-1634-E Farrington Highway, fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

Soo said the house was being renovated and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters responding to the 1:12 a.m. alarm had the blaze, which started in the back of the house, under control at 1:18 a.m., Soo said.

CENTRAL

Dead man’s home burns

A Waipahu home gutted by fire at 2:32 a.m. yesterday was the same home where the body of a 55-year-old man had been found the previous day, according to the fire department.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home at 94-1240 Kahuaina St. sustained an estimated $150,000 worth of damage, and $20,000 worth of damage was done to its contents.

At about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, emergency crews were called to the home and discovered the body of a man, possibly the homeowner, according to the fire department.

The man has not been identified, but the medical examiners’ office said the victim died of natural causes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wounded man to face charges

A man who was shot and wounded by a police officer in Mililani Mauka on Jan. 14 was arrested and charged with driving a stolen motorcycle and drug offenses, police said.

Police arrested Kelly Donnarumma, 34, after he was released from the Queen’s Medical Center on Wednesday.

He was charged with unauthorized control of a vehicle and two drug offenses. His bail was set at $40,000.

Police said Donnarumma fled from the Mililani Town Center on a stolen motorcycle.

A 29-year-old officer chased Donnarumma to a construction site at the end of Meheula Parkway in Mililani Mauka, police said.

The officer said he fired a shot after he saw Donnarumma reaching for something in his fanny pack, police said. Police obtained a search warrant and later found in the bag drugs, drug paraphernalia and money.

However, no gun was found, police said.

WINDWARD

Sailors rescued after capsize

Firefighters rescued two boaters yesterday when their 16-foot catamaran capsized about a mile off Waimanalo.

Firefighters responded to the 4 p.m. call with a small jet boat and a rescue boat, said acting Capt. Dexter Almeida of the Waimanalo Fire Station.

He said the two men were sailing back to Waimanalo from the Makapuu area when their catamaran overturned.

No one was hurt, Almeida said. Retrieval of the catamaran was postponed because of darkness, Almeida said. It probably will be retreived today.

HONOLULU

Not guilty pleas in H-1 wrong-way case

The Kalihi man who police say last year drove the wrong way on the H-1 Freeway, causing a seven-car pileup, pleaded not guilty to 10 charges yesterday.

Benjamin C. Belleza, 57, was charged with terroristic threatening, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render assistance, assault and reckless endangering — all misdemeanors — as a result of the Jan. 18, 2000, incident.

A car with a pregnant woman was among those struck by the retired Waikiki hotel worker near the Ward Avenue overpass, police said. The woman gave birth to a healthy baby later that day.

Authorities say Belleza has a history of mental illness and was on a medication for depression at the time of the crash.
