UH deserves support in its computer battle
Few things would better serve to vault Hawaii into the high-tech New Economy than having its flagship university operate one of the worlds premier supercomputers.
The University of Hawaii has emerged as the key competitor to the University of New Mexico for the contract to operate the Maui High Performance Computer Center and its supercomputer.
The University of New Mexico has managed the center, reports The Advertisers John Duchemin, since its creation in the early 1990s, helping the Air Force conduct experiments, farm out unused capacity, monitor systems and upgrade equipment.
Now the contract is up for bid, and UH is reaching for greatness.
Since the entire state stands to benefit if UH lands this high-tech plum, the entire state the governor, Legislature and business community should join the effort.
