Nick Spajic hit 12 of 15 field-goal attempts en route to 30 points as Hawaii Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii, 76-70, in a Pacific West Conference mens basketball game at Blaisdell Arena last night.
Hawaii Pacific is 11-16, 6-12 in the PacWest. BYUH is 14-13, 9-9.
Kawika Smith and Michael Paul added 14 points each for the Sea Warriors. Scott Salisbury led BYUH with 12 points.
BASEBALL
Rice tops Hilo: Jon Skaggs threw his first complete game of the season to pitch No. 1-ranked Rice over Hawaii-Hilo, 6-2, yesterday in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Reckling Park in Houston.
It was the Vulcans fourth consecutive loss, all during their Texas road trip. The series continues today.
Skaggs (3-0) scattered six hits and struck out nine against the Vulcans (3-12, 2-5 WAC).
Robert Shimabuku (0-5) allowed six runs in 3á innings. Sergio Reyes followed with 4¡ innings of scoreless relief.
Enrique Cruz and Jesse Roman each hit a home run for the Owls (11-2, 1-0), ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.

UH rained out: Hawaiis non-conference baseball game at Sacramento State was canceled because of rain yesterday.
The game was supposed to be a make-up of Wednesdays rained out game. The game will not be made up.
The Rainbows start a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Fresno State starting tomorrow. Game time is 5 p.m. Hawaii time, and is scheduled to be aired live on KCCN (1420 AM).
HPU beats George Fox, 12-4: Bryce Uegawachi and Jeremiah Yacap each had three hits and drove in two runs, leading Hawaii Pacific to a 12-4 victory over George Fox last night at Hans LOrange Park.
Tom Peters had three hits and drove in two run as HPU (5-4) pounded out 15 hits off five George Fox (0-5) pitchers.
Matt Zachery allowed 11 hits and three runs over seven innings to earn the victory. Eli Lloyd finished, allowing a run on two hits.
SWIMMING
UH women set record: The University of Hawaii womens 200-yard freestyle relay team broke a 4-year-old pool record at the Western Athletic Conference Womens Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at San Antonio, Texas.
The Wahine team-Sarah Simonsen, Lori Thomas, Sara Watchorn and Renate DuPlessis -won the event in 1 minute, 31.09 seconds. The time broke a Palo Alto College Natatorium record set by Southern Methodist in 1997.
Southern Methodist leads the seven-team WAC meet with 301 points, followed by Hawaii (167), Rice (166), Nevada (131) and Texas Christian (99).
UH (DuPlessis, Morgan Hoesterey, Thomas and Simonsen) placed second in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:45.11, behind first-place SMU (3:39.60).
Watchorn was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.20 seconds. Katina Maistrellis of SMU won in 22.72.
UHs Sarah Farr finished third in the diving with 290.15 points. SMUs Lindsay Long was first with 397.50 points.
SOFTBALL
Wahine get votes: The University of Hawaii Wahine softball team received 12 points in the latest USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25.
Top-ranked UCLA received 19 first-place votes for 667 points, followed by Arizonas 646 points.
HONORS
Academic honors: University of Hawaii mens basketball players Nerijus Puida and Predrag Savovic were named to the five-man Verizon Academic All-District VII Team yesterday.
Puida, of Sakiu Raj, Lithuania, and Savovic of Herceg Novi, Yugoslavia, are seniors majoring in general business. Puida, a forward, has a 3.52 grade-point average and Savovic, a guard, has a 3.25 GPA.
The team is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association. District VII includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
Others named to the team were Dan Dickau of Gonzaga, Tim Erickson of Idaho State and Aaron Olson of Eastern Washington.
Puida and Savovic are eligible for the national all-academic team, which will be announced March 13.
