Isle hotels post occupancy increase

The year has started well for Hawaii’s hotel and resort condominium industry.

PKF-Hawaii reported yesterday that statewide occupancy averaged 78 percent last month, the highest January occupancy level since 1996. Hawaii posted a rate of 70.7 percent in January of last year.

All islands enjoyed occupancy increases.

Oahu led the way with a rate of 82.4 percent, up from 73.4 percent. Molokai’s occupancy rate jumped from 60.1 percent to 68.3 percent, while Maui’s rate rose from 70.6 percent to 77.8 percent.

The occupancy rate on the Big Island stood at 71.9 percent last month, up from 66.8 percent in the previous January, and Kauai’s improved from 59.2 percent to 63.6 percent.

The hospitality industry consultant also reported that the average daily room rate in January was $163.49, up from $159.04 a year ago.
