New Mexico triumphs in Burns golf

Advertiser Staff

Eighth-ranked New Mexico shot the low round for the second consecutive day to win the John Burns Intercollegiate yesterday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The Lobos closed with an 8-under-par 279 (best four scores of a five-man team) to finish at 32-under 832 for the three-day event. That was five better than Auburn (279), No. 33 in the GolfWeek/ Sagarin men’s ratings, and 11 ahead of No. 32 UNLV (283).

Host University of Hawaii, weakened by a flu bug, tied for 12th, at 293-871. Sophomore Scott Carlyle (69-210) was the only Warrior in the top 40, finishing 11th. UH-Hilo (312-911) was last in the 19-team field.

New Mexico’s Michael Letzig, who fired an 8-under 64 Thursday, took medalist honors. Letzig, ranked 124th, closed with a 69 and was 17-under for the tournament, with 23 of his team’s 66 birdies.

Fresno State’s Nick Watney, the 2000 WAC Freshman of the Year, pulled into tied for second with a final-round 65. He and Auburn’s Lee Williams (69) shot 204. There were 35 players par or better.

Hawaii is fifth in the District 7 rankings. The top six go to the NCAA Tournament. District members Fresno State (sixth), UTEP (seventh) and Colorado State (eighth) finished ahead of the Warriors here, and are ranked lower.

"The players understand we lost to people that we needed to beat in this tournament as far as district and NCAA standing," said UH coach Ronn Miyashiro, who played four sophomores and a freshman. "In our next three tournaments, we’ll see these people again."

BASEBALL

Rice shuts out Hilo: Three Rice pitchers combined on an eight hitter as the Owls defeated University of Hawaii-Hilo, 7-0, in a Western Athletic Conference game at Reckling Park in Houston yesterday.

Rice is 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the WAC. Hilo is 3-13 and 2-6.

Rice starter Kenny Baugh (2-0) allowed six hits, struck out five and walked four in seven innings. Steve Herce and Bill Jacobsen pitched one inning each.

"Baugh was tough, just outstanding," UH-Hilo coach Joey Estrella said. "That’s why he’s been one of the better pitchers in college baseball the last few seasons. We got eight hits off of him, but they were scattered, and a lot of them were after two outs. We hit the ball hard, but right at people."

Rice’s Jesse Roman had three runs batted in on a double and sacrifice fly.

Hilo’s Ryan Petersen, Keola Park and Mike Hobbs each had two hits.

The series concludes today.

SURFING

Meet postponed: The Hawaiian Island Creations Pipeline Pro was postponed for the fourth consecutive day yesterday because of insufficient conditions at the Banzai Pipeline.

The contest could begin this weekend, when waves in the 10-foot range are expected to arrive on Oahu’s North Shore.

Most of Hawaii’s top surfers are expected to compete, including world champion Sunny Garcia. The event will run on the three best days before March 4.

HONORS

Murphys honored: Don and Marion Murphy, longtime University of Hawaii athletics supporters, were awarded the 2001 Charles Ushijima Rainbow Service Award.

For the past five years, the Murphys hosted numerous fund-raisers at their downtown Murphy’s Bar and Grill restaurant for UH athletics.

The Charles Ushijima Award is presented annually to volunteers who have given their support to UH athletics.
