Facility moving plan on agenda
The states plans to move the Juvenile Sex Offender Treatment Facility from Pearl City will be presented and discussed at the Wahiawa Neighborhood Board meeting tonight at 7. It meets in Fred Wright Parks recreation center.
The facility treats boys from 12 to 17 who have had sexual relations with family members. They are not classified as predators or violent offenders.
After residents said it was too close to two public schools, Gov. Ben Cayetano said it would be moved if a suitable facility were found.
Three possible locations are at Kemoo Farm in Wahiawa, Kalaeloa and Kahi Mohala hospital in Ewa. Tonights meeting is meant to gather community response, said consultant Herb Lee Jr.
Light weekend for lifeguards
Surf along the North Shore dropped yesterday to 6 to 8 feet from 10 to 12 feet on Saturday. By midafternoon yesterday, lifeguards had not responded to any serious incidents, said lifeguard Capt. Bodo Van Der Leeden.
Saturday was busier, he said, with several rescues from the shorebreak at Waimea Bay.
Surf is expected to increase this morning and reach 10 to 12 feet by noon.
Plan targets Baywatch site
Honolulu Councilwoman Rene Mansho has introduced a resolution to convert the "Baywatch Hawaii" facility on Oahus North Shore into a youth center.
Mansho proposes that the structure be renovated to be used by schools and organizations for recreational activities and classes.
"Baywatch Hawaii" recently was canceled because of poor ratings. It filmed on the Islands for two years. The last episode airs the week of May 21.
