HILO, Hawaii — Rian M.S. Lau has been appointed the Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network’s assistant state director. He will manage six offices in Hawaii from a headquarters at University of Hawaii-Hilo.

Lau also will direct program delivery at offices on Bishop Street in Honolulu, at Kauai Community College and the current Big Island office in Hilo, due to be split later this year into East and West Hawaii branches, as well as two offices on Maui.

Established in 1990 under an agreement between UH-Hilo and the federal Small Business Administration, the Hawaii network serves an estimated 1,000 businesses each year and conducts 130 seminars annually.

The Hilo operation is recipient of the Hawaii State Award of Excellence from the statewide Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii.

Lau served as vice president of operations of HPM Building Supply for six years and general manager of Hawaii Impulse Systems Inc. for eight years. He is a graduate of the UH-Manoa executive MBA program.

Director Darryl Mleynek said Lau will help manage 20 employees statewide "and enable us to bring on additional projects and to manage them to successful outcomes."
