Relatives and close friends yesterday were allowed to briefly visit with University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones, who remained in guarded but stable condition at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Jones, who was injured in a single-car accident on the H-1 Freeway Thursday, seemed to understand and respond to visitors, said a UH official.

He is breathing on his own and his "alertness is improving," a hospital press release said.

According to a UH official, Jones is expected to remain hospitalized for at least two more weeks, meaning he will miss the start of spring practice on Thursday.

Associate head coach George Lumpkin will oversee the 15 spring practice sessions.
