Fresno St. edges UH in 11 innings, 6-5

Advertiser Staff

Josh Labandeira’s one-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Fresno State over Hawaii, 6-5, in Western Athletic Conference baseball yesterday at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbows (7-7, 2-3 WAC), losers of three consecutive, took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 11th. They broke a 4-all tie on a two-out error by third baseman Nick Garcia.

But in the home half of the 11th, the Bulldogs (9-5, 4-1) loaded the bases with one out against UH closer Bryan Lee (1-1) with a single by pinch hitter Scott Beshears, a walk to Brandon Gemoll and a single by Casey McGehee. Labandeira then drilled a two-ball, no-strike pitch into left-center for a two-run single.

"It’s a tough loss," UH coach Carl Furutani said. "We just have to regroup."

The scoreless pitching duel between Fresno State’s Francisco Nieves and UH’s Sean Yamashita was broken in the top of the sixth on two-run doubles by Gregg Omori and Brian Bock. Yamashita allowed no runs in 6á innings, while Nieves gave up four (three earned) in 5¡ innings.

But the Bulldogs bit back with a three-run eighth on Labandeira’s sacrifice fly to right and consecutive two- out, RBI singles by Simon Tafoya and Garcia against UH reliever Wakon Childers.

Childers took the 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Tom Creighton walked and stole second. After Oscar Lopez’s foul pop out to first, shortstop Cortland Wilson misplayed Gemoll’s grounder for an error, allowing Creighton to score the tying run.

"He got stuck in between hops," explained Furutani.

After McGehee followed with a single, Childers was replaced by Lee, who intentionally walked Labandeira to load the bases. Lee then struck out Tafoya.

The Rainbows regained the lead in the 11th off Nick Moran (1-1). Wilson led off with a single and advanced to second on Arthur Guillen’s sacrifice. Wilson took third on Matthew Purtell’s ground out to second.

Garcia then misplayed Patrick Scalabrini’s grounder, allowing Wilson to score the go-ahead run.

The last game of the series is at 5 p.m. today, Hawaii time. The game will be live on KCCN (AM 1420).
