Wrestling tournaments are among the most complicated events in sports for scorekeepers.
In addition to points for the place each wrestler finishes, there are points for advancement, points for falls (pins), and points for reaching certain levels of points during an individual match.
So it can be understood that after many hours of wrestling in a tournament, even with the help of computers, mistakes can be made. Thats what happened last weekend in both the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the Oahu Interscholastic Association championships.
As a result, incorrect champions were declared or reported for ILH and OIA girls tournaments. The errors were caught and corrected during the weekend and new scores were reported yesterday.
Kamehameha won the ILH girls title by one point over Pac-Five while Castle and Moanalua tied for the OIA girls crown.
There were no place changes in ILH varsity boys, but all the scores reported Saturday night were incorrect. In ILH junior varsity boys, eighth and ninth place and several of the scores were changed.
