Fresno State completed a three-game sweep by beating Hawaii, 8-4, in Western Athletic Conference baseball last night at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.
The Bulldogs (10-5, 5-1 WAC) lead the conference by a half-game over idle Rice (13-2, 3-0), ranked second by Collegiate Baseball and sixth by Baseball America.
The Rainbows (7-8, 2-4) lost their season-high fourth consecutive game, falling under .500 for the first time. They conclude their California road swing with a three-game series at San Jose State starting Thursday.
Pitcher Ozzie Gonzalez (2-0) allowed two runs in 2á innings of relief.
"They played hard," UH acting coach Carl Furutani said of his players. "In the first inning (FSU) had a lot of seeing-eye hits. Its baseball. You need some luck, too."
The Bulldogs committed two errors, although neither accounted for any unearned runs.
The Bulldogs also saw a runner thrown out at the plate in an inning in which they had a single, double and hit batsman, and failed to score.
But the Rainbows had their moments, too. Twice UH runners were caught stealing for the final out of an inning.
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fourth, Patrick Scalabrini grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Hawaii starter Chad Giannetti was tagged for five runs in the first two innings of his 4 1/3-inning outing.
Run-scoring singles by Casey McGehee and Tobey Riday-White gave FSU a 2-0 lead in the first. A double, infield single and an RBI force play by Tom Creighton, and a two-run home run by Brandon Gemoll accounted for a three-run second.
Gregg Omoris two-run home run in the third helped chase FSU starter Bob Runyan after 2 2/3 innings. After giving up the homer, he got an out, then allowed singles to Chad Boudon and Jacob Flick. Gonzalez came in, but the Rainbows doused their own flames when Boudon was caught stealing third to end the inning.
The Rainbows pulled to 5-4 with a two-run sixth on an RBI ground out to second by Arthur Guillen and an RBI single by Matthew Purtell.
But FSU cushioned its lead in the next two innings. A two-base throwing error by UH shortstop Wilson gave FSU a run in the seventh to make it 6-4.
An RBI single by McGehee and wild pitch gave the Bulldogs two more runs in the eighth.
The Rainbows started the ninth with infield singles by Lane Nogawa and Purtell against reliever Beau Hintz. But Ben Fritz, who started the game at catcher, came in to get the the final three outs for his second save of the series and fourth of the season.
Tosses: Infielder Danny Kimura (hamstring) and outfielder Derek Honma (shoulder) are still day-to-day. Kimura is about "three-quarters speed," said UH acting coach Carl Furutani, who added Kimura was available to pinch-hit during the Fresno State series.
