Honolulu detective charged in theft case

Advertiser Staff

The state Attorney General's office has filed a two-count complaint against Honolulu Police Detective James M. Kawakami, charging he stole over $20,000 from the state and the police department.

According to the attorney general's office, Kawakami performed extraditions between Oct. 12, 1994 to June 16, 2000 for the Big Island prosecutor's office without consent of Honolulu police, then falsified payment requests.

Kawakami also allegedly kept airline coupons and per diem payments for people who did not participate in the extraditions.

Kawakami is scheduled for arraignment on Thursday.
