OCCC escapee recaptured by police

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

Prison escapee Kerbert Silva was recaptured in a Makakilo neighborhood at 4:55 this afternoon.

Silva escaped from the Oahu Community Correctional Center Jan. 17, his 37th birthday, by climbing a 16-foot-high fence that was topped with razor wire. He was spotted at least twice in the Nanakuli area in the past week, but was able to allude police until today.

Silva was apprehended after an anonymous caller told police that a man was seen in a vacant townhouse on Lalahi Street. An officer on the scene spotted the man, who then fled on foot.

The officer caught up with the man, who turned out to be Silva, in a parking lot at 92-1340 Panana St. The two struggled as Silva attempted to escape again, police said.

Another anonymous caller called police to report that an officer was struggling with Silva. The officer was able to subdue Silva before other officers arrived.
