Jang, Beethoven on symphony bill

Iggy Jang, violinist and concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, will be a soloist in the orchestra’s Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony program at 4 p.m. March 11 and 7:30 p.m. March 13 at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Samuel Wong will conduct.

Jang, born to Korean parents in Grenoble, France, will be featured on Chausson’s "Poeme" and Ravel’s "Tzigane." Besides the Beethoven piece, the repertoire will include Berlioz’s "Le Corsaire Overture."

Tickets: $55, $40, $30, $25 and $15, on sale at the Blaisdell box office, plus Ticket Plus outlets.

Steel Magnolias’ cast picked by DHT

Wisa D’Orso, a Broadway veteran, will portray Clairee in Diamond Head Theatre’s revival of "Steel Magnolias," a comedy set in a beauty shop, which will premiere March 30 and run through April 15.

The Robert Harling comedy will be guest-directed by Sean O’Malley.

Others in the cast will be Stefanie Anderson as Truvy, Sharon Adair as Ouiser, Amber Nicolson as M’Lynn, Rebecca Phillips as Annelle and Lisa Young as Shelby.

The production will be staged at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Choreographers will join Alumni Fest

Alumni choreographers from the University of Hawaii will be featured in "Alumni Fest," a dance concert, at 8 p.m. March 9 and 10 and 2 p.m. March 11 at Kennedy Theatre.

Participants will include Caren Carino, Darryl Thomas, Chris D.C. Ramos, Eddie Taketa, Vicky Holt Takamine, Paul Maley and Sarah Kobayashi.

Dance styles to be showcased include ballet, hula, jazz and modern.

One of the highlights will be "Bench Quartet," choreographed by Doug Varone and staged by Taketa, a native of the Big Island who has danced with Lar Lubavich, Tandy Beal, Alwin Nikolais, Murray Louis and currently Valone. Taketa also will be seen in "Doug Varone and Dancers" at 7:30 p.m. March 16 and 17 at Kennedy.

Tickets: $12; $9 for seniors, military and UH faculty; $7 for students; $3 for UH students; tickets for the Varone concert are $20, $18 for seniors, military and UH faculty, $9 for UH students.
