Hawaiians plan protest walk on Maui

Advertiser Staff

LAHAINA, Maui — A peaceful protest walk to demonstrate opposition to a federal court lawsuit challenging Native Hawaiian entitlements is planned for Sunday.

Sponsored by Na K¬puna o Maui, the "Kue Elua Walk of Aloha" will start at noon at the Mokuula Island restoration project at Maluulu o Lele Park in Lahaina and proceed to Black Rock in Kaanapali.

Organizers say the event is one of a several protesting a lawsuit filed by Patrick Barrett challenging Native Hawaiian programs guaranteed by the state Constitution.

"This case could possibly result in the eviction of Native Hawaiian homesteaders across the state, the depletion of our gathering rights and the loss of millions of Native Hawaiian trust dollars," said Kapali Keahi, spokesman for Na Kupuna o Maui (The Elders of Maui).
