Hawai'i baseball team drops fifth in row, 6-3

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's fielding woes continue and so does its losing streak.

A first-inning error helped pave the way for four San Jose State runs in its 6-3 win against Hawaii in Western Athletic Conference baseball last night at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

The Rainbows (7-9, 2-5) committed two errors, their seventh and eighth during their five-game slide.

The Spartans (8-6-1, 3-3) took advantage of a fielding error by shortstop Cortland Wilson on an apparent double play grounder in the first inning that saw 10 batters reach the plate.

"He was going over the bag and he took his eye off the ball," UH acting coach Carl Furutani said of the error.

The Rainbows’ most effective and consistent starting pitcher until last night was Jeff Coleman (1-3). But he got only one out and faced just eight batters before giving way to Matt Le Ducq. Coleman allowed four runs and six hits.

Wilson partially atoned for his error with a two-run single in the top of the second inning. The Rainbows pulled to within one in the third on Aaron Pribble’s RBI single.

Le Ducq did his best to keep the Rainbows close, pitching six innings of relief. He suffered a cramp in the seventh inning when he surrendered a one-out walk and an RBI double to Junior Ruiz, Furutani said.

Wakon Childers was summoned and allowed an RBI double to Brandon Macchi before getting the next two outs.

Chris Sherman (2-2) pitched six innings and Matt Kauffman followed with three scoreless and hitless innings for his first save.

In an effort to bolster the offense, designated hitter/second baseman Matthew Purtell started in center field last night. Pribble was the DH.

SHORT HOPS: Danny Kimura played for the first time since pulling a hamstring Feb. 16 against Nevada. Kimura was 2 for 5. ... Derek Honma, out with a shoulder injury since Feb. 9 against Louisville, pinch-ran for Kimura in the ninth. ... The series continues at 5 p.m. today, Hawaii time. The game will be broadcast live on KCCN (AM 1420). ... Hawaii’s Sean Yamashita (0-1, 4.12) and SJSU’s Tim Adinolfi (2-2, 5.21) are the probable starting pitchers for tonight’s game.
