Motorcyclist killed in Big Isle collision

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — Hawaii County recorded its first traffic fatality of the year when a Kailua-Kona man died early yesterday after his motorcycle collided with a sports utility vehicle at the intersection of Kuakini Highway and Lako Street.

The victim was identified as Joseph I. Kaipo, 36.

Kaipo was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. at Kona Community Hospital. Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

There were six Big Island road deaths at this time last year.


Hawaii woman picked for top post

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has nominated a Hawaii woman for promotion to brigadier general in the Army Reserve.

Col. Coral Wong Pietsch will become the first Asian-American female general if the U.S. Senate confirms the nomination.

Pietsch, who has lived in Hawaii since 1986, joined the Army as a lawyer in 1974.

She worked as an Army attorney in South Korea and Fort Shafter before she left active duty and joined the Army Reserve in 1980.

She was assigned as chief judge in the Army Reserve last May, supervising a staff of attorneys.


March 25 concert canceled at UH

Green Day has canceled its March 25 concert at Andrews Amphitheater on the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii.

Tickets will be refunded at the points of purchase. If tickets were purchased at a Ticket Plus outlet or by charge-by-phone, they should be mailed to Ticket Plus, P.O. Box 653, Honolulu, HI 96809 for refunds.


Man arrested in armed robbery

Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with an armed robbery in January of two auto repair workers.

Vincent Scanlan was apprehended Thursday night in Waimalu and arrested on suspicion of two counts of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault, police said.

The two repair workers were robbed Jan. 3 in a secluded area at 96-029 Waiawa Road near Leeward Community College, police said.

Last month, police charged Chad Wilderman, 27, with first-degree robbery in the case. His bail was set at $150,000.
