UH loses sixth in row, 8-4, at San Jose

In what is turning out to be the road trip to purgatory, the Hawaii baseball team extended its losing streak to six, falling to San Jose State, 8-4, last night at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

"We didn’t execute when we needed to," UH acting coach Carl Furutani said. "It’s the little things. It catches up to you after a while.

"But the effort and desire is there. There’s nothing wrong with that."

Aside from stopping their slide, the Rainbows will try to avert a sweep in today’s series finale. The Western Athletic Conference game is set for 9:30 a.m. Hawaii time, 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled because rain is forecast for later in the day.

The game will be broadcast live on KCCN (1420 AM) until the UH-Texas Christian basketball game at 11 a.m. But updates on the baseball game will be provided during the basketball broadcast.

The Rainbows (7-10, 2-6 WAC) were handcuffed for six innings by San Jose State starter Tim Adinolfi (3-2). In the seventh, trailing 8-0, the Rainbows finally tagged Adinolfi for four runs, one on a solo home run by Tim Montgomery and a three-run shot by Patrick Scalabrini.

Adinolfi struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings. His offensive support came during a four-run fifth on two-run singles each by Ryan Brucker and Junior Ruiz off UH starter Sean Yamashita (0-2).

"He mixed his speed and located (his pitches) well," Furutani said of Adinolfi.

Ryan Adams added a two-run home run off reliever Ryan Yamamoto in a three-run sixth for San Jose State (9-6-1, 4-3).

Yamashita pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) and seven hits. He walked none and struck out three.

The Rainbows not only seek to end their losing streak, but want to prove they can win in San Jose. They are 1-13 at Municipal Stadium since 1997.

To bolster the offense, Furutani said some options will be considered. Arthur Guillen might spell Matthew Purtell in center field. Purtell, who bats leadoff, is 0 for 8 in his last two games.

Chad Giannetti (1-2, 5.06 ERA) will pitch for UH against San Jose State’s Jeremy Rogelstad (0-1, 5.50).
