Man stabbed with fishing spear

A 30-year-old man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition following a domestic argument in Kalihi in which he was stabbed with a fishing spear, police and medical officials said.

Paramedics responded to the assault call at 4:25 p.m. Friday at 2863-A Kalihi St., said Donnie Gates, chief of operations for the city’s Emergency Medical Services.

The injured man suffered an injury to his chest, Gates said.

Police arrested the man’s 17-year-old nephew on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, said Sgt. John McEntire. The nephew allegedly stabbed his uncle with a three-pronged fishing spear during an argument, McEntire said.

Package treated as biological threat

HAUULA — Police, fire and health departments responded Friday afternoon to a possible biological threat from a package that was mailed to a Hauula address from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Residents at 54-178 Kawaeku St., called police at 12:30 p.m. after the postal carrier delivered a blue package to their home, said fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo. The residents were suspicious because they hadn’t ordered the package and could not identify it. The blue package, 6 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches, emitted a fruity perfume smell.

Police alerted the fire department at 1:15 p.m. The Hauula engine responded as well as two hazardous material teams, which treated the package as a biological problem, Soo said. One team removed the package from the home and double- bagged it, he said. The other team soaked the package in a chlorine solution to neutralize it.

The state Department of Health Hazardous Emergency Response Office picked up the package and was to examine it, Soo said.
