Rice thumps Hawai'i-Hilo, 9-0

Kenny Baugh and Jeff Nichols teamed on a four-hitter as nationally-ranked Rice defeated the University of Hawaii-Hilo, 9-0, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game at Wong Stadium.

Baugh (3-0) worked 6‡ innings, allowing three hits, striking out six and walking four. Nichols pitched 2Á innings, striking out four without issuing a walk.

Eric Arnold had four hits and four RBIs and Jose Cruz hit a bases-clearing double for the Owls, who are rated as high as No. 2 on one national ranking. Austin Davis and Phillip Ghutzman each had two hits for Rice, which improved to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the WAC.

Todd Jinbo had two hits for UH-Hilo (3-15, 2-8).

The series continues with 6 p.m. games today and tomorrow at Wong Stadium.

MEETINGS

QB Club: Pete Smith, coach of state high school boys basketball champion Kalaheo, will be the featured speaker at tomorrow’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon at the Pagoda ballroom.

Other speakers include Keith Amemiya of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, Hawaii Pacific softball coach Howard Okita and University of Hawaii assistant football coach Dan Morrison.

The public is invited.
