Jets to land at Kane'ohe

Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i at Kane‘ohe is the stopover point for jet squadrons this week as they travel across the Pacific.

One squadron arrived yesterday and will depart today. The other will land Friday afternoon, departing Sunday morning.

Iwo Jima author at fund-raiser

James Bradley, author of “Flags of our Fathers” about the flag-raising group in the 1945 Iwo Jima battle, will be guest of honor at a fund-raising dinner and book signing March 16, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom.

Proceeds support the Pacific War Memorial Association’s effort to build an Iwo Jima Memorial at the entrance of Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i.

Tickets, which cost $100 ($60 is tax-deductible), must be purchased by next Monday.

Marines aid Kalaupapa fliers

Marines from Kane‘ohe airlifted a custom-made wheelchair ramp for Hansen’s disease patients at Kalaupapa last week.

The ramp was built by Pacific Wings Airlines, a Maui-based company that provides the only daily flights to the isolated peninsula.

Company president Greg Kahlstorf said the 500-pound ramps his company purchased were too big to fit inside one of his Cessna 402 airplanes.

Enter the Marines.

The Red Lions squadron flew a CH-53D helicopter to Maui to pick up the ramp and deliver it Wednesday on Moloka‘i, Kahlstorf said.

After it arrived, the residents held a blessing.

“We hadn’t realized that a lot of people there had given up on air travel,“ he said. “They are elderly and it is just hard to get on planes.

“We had a lot of people come up to us and say we are going to be able to fly again and visit relatives.

“They are mobile again.”
