Federal court ruling tightens Napster noose

Advertiser News Services

SAN FRANCISCO — Putting a virtual straitjacket on Napster Inc., a federal judge posted a ruling yesterday telling music companies to catalog the copyright-protected songs they want removed from the Internet file-swapping service and giving Napster three business days to comply.

The order, dated Monday, compels the music industry to prove ownership of the particular songs it wants excluded from the wildly popular digital music clearinghouse, which turned music distribution on its head and cultivated a following of millions.

Meanwhile, Napster was hit on another legal front when the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the producers of the Grammy Awards, filed a copyright infringement suit that mirrors the ones filed by the recording industry. The academy is seeking to prohibit Napster from allowing users to download recordings of live performances aired at last month’s awards show.
