Fun, food, football at UH spring event

Wanna challenge Tim Chang throwing the football? How ’bout stuffing your face in a pizza-eating contest against University of Hawaii coaches, players and members of the media?

If that doesn’t interest you, then how about a free trip to Las Vegas?

It’s all part of the University of Hawaii Football Spring Challenge, which will take place March 25 as part of the UH football spring intrasquad scrimmage at Cooke Field.

The day will feature events such three different quarterback challenges with former UH players and fans participating.

Also featured will be defensive backs pitted against wide receivers in an obstacle course race, offensive linemen against defensive linemen in a tug-of-war, running backs against linebackers in a Dizzy Izzy contest, and a kickers against punters contest.

Only the first 3,000 fans will be allowed in the gates.

Fans also may enter to win:

A free roundtrip for two to Las Vegas, courtesy of Vacations Hawaii;

A free cellular telephone with $25 service credit from AT&T Wireless;

A roundtrip ticket for two to the Hawaii vs. Nevada football game in Reno, courtesy of Panda Travel (includes airfare, hotel, transportation, game tickets and entrance to VIP events).

Fans also can enter to compete against UH coaches, players and media personalities in the Papa John’s Pizza Eating contest. The winner will receive free pizza from Papa John’s for a year.

There will be a postgame concert sponsored by KCCN with Kahiau and Sean Naauao. Presale tickets are on sale now at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office.

Autograph and picture-taking with coaches and players

5:30 p.m.
Quarterback Throwing Challenge (Tim Chang vs. media; Tim Chang vs. former UH quarterbacks).
Defensive backs obstacle course.
Tug-of-war (offensive vs. defensive line).
Dizzy Izzy (running backs vs. linebackers).
Kicking contest (kickers vs. punters).
Intrasquad scrimmage (Green vs. White).
Papa John’s Pizza Eating Contest (coaches/players/media)

Presale-Adults $7, children (4 through high school) $5, children under 4 free; UH students with valid ID free, Na Koa members $6.

At the gate-Adults $8, children (4 through high school) $6, children under 4 free, UH students with valid ID free, Na Koa members $7, fans with March 25 baseball ticket stub $4.


FUND-RAISER

Party at Murphy’s: Murphy’s Bar & Grill and Gusto Magazine will stage the 4th Annual Irish Fry, Saturday from 10 a.m to 1p.m.

Traditional Irish dishes, including Murphy’s corned beef hash, will be served.

All proceeds will benefit Coaches vs. Cancer, an annual fund-raiser sponsored by the University of Hawaii basketball program. It helps support patient programs, research and services in Hawaii provided by the American Cancer Society.

Last year, UH basketball raised more than $127,000, finishing No. 2 nationally out of more than 400 schools.
