Free-agent quarterback Elvis Grbac wanted to play for a winner. The Baltimore Ravens were a logical choice.
Grbac agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract with the Super Bowl champion Ravens yesterday. The deal includes an $11 million signing bonus.
"Winning is the only thing on his agenda playing in a Super Bowl and winning a Super Bowl," Grbacs agent, Jim Steiner, said.
Grbac threw for 28 touchdowns and 4,169 yards with Kansas City last season and earned a spot in the Pro Bowl. He was one of two highly sought free-agent quarterbacks, along with Brad Johnson.
Johnson signed a five-year, $28 million deal with Tampa Bay on Monday.
Grbac initiated the talks with Baltimore by visiting the Ravens Friday and meeting with coach Brian Billick.
Grbacs signing means the Ravens will not keep Trent Dilfer, who won his last 11 starts with Baltimore, including a 34-7 Super Bowl victory over the New York Giants.
CHARGERS
Flutie visits: Doug Flutie and San Diego sized each other up yesterday and liked what they saw.
Chargers coach Mike Riley envisions Flutie bridging the gap to when Michael Vick, the likely first pick in the draft, is ready to play. And Flutie, who was cut by the Buffalo Bills last week, would be reunited with John Butler, the Chargers new general manager who brought the former Canadian Football League quarterback back to the NFL in 1998.
BRONCOS
Hearing postponed: A court hearing in a driving-under-suspension case involving tight end Byron Chamberlain has been postponed until April 4. Chamberlain, charged with driving with a suspended license, has played six years with the Broncos.
FOOTNOTES
Bengals: Free agent Tony Williams signed a four-year contract. The 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive end, had 21 solo tackles, 22 assists and four sacks last season with Minnesota.
Falcons: Atlanta traded an undisclosed draft pick to Tampa Bay to acquire former Georgia quarterback Eric Zeier. Zeier will back up starter Chris Chandler.
Patriots: New England signed linebacker Larry Izzo, who made his mark with Miami last season by becoming the first Dolphins special teams player named to the Pro Bowl.
Dolphins: Miami re-signed linebacker Twan Russell to a three-year contract. Russell tied for second on the team last year with 26 special-teams tackles.
Chargers: San Diego signed cornerback Alex Molden, an unrestricted free agent from New Orleans.
