Walk in the park fights diabetes

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Staff Writer

Here’s a way to help a good cause — and burn some calories.

Hawaii’s Walk for Diabetes and Family Fun Day, a fund-raiser to support local diabetes programs and services, begins with the walk at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7 at Kapiolani Park. The route loops around the park — 2.2 miles — and finishes with food booths and entertainment.

The Family Fun Day, free to the public, runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kapiolani Park. There will be prizes for top fund-raising walking teams and individuals, as well as prize drawings and giveaways.

A minimum $25 donation is requested from walk participants. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.

At least 80,000 people in Hawaii have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Because of the state’s large Asian and Pacific Islander population — two ethnic groups at high risk — Hawaii leads the nation with the number of people per capita with diabetes.

For more information, call the American Diabetes Association at 947-5979.
