Clarence Lee of Honolulu is the 2001 recipient of the Koa Outstanding Artist Award for his lifelong pursuit of excellence and achievement in art. The award is from Kapiolani Community College.
The state winners of the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest are: Brad Tanabe, a sixth-grader at King Liholiho Elementary; Paul Takaezu, a seventh-grader at Christian Academy; and Jessica Medcalf, an eighth-grader at Christian Academy. The winner of the DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is Paw Naw, a 12th-grader at Hawaii Baptist Academy.
The 2001 Ola Pono Awards recognized seven local individuals and programs for their outstanding efforts to help make Hawaii a healthy, drug-free place to live. The winners are:
Individual/Youth category: Janice Bond; Individual/Adult: Steven Alm; Individual/Youth/Volunteer: Derrick Bulatao, also known as DJ Kutmaster Spaz; Group/Youth/Volunteer: Forte, a local singing group made up of Marlene Baldueza, Gissele Tejada, Joanne Banda and Kristina Babaran; Group/Adult: Laulima Pacific Inc.; Group/Youth/Volunteer: Optimist Club of Honolulu. Meadow Gold Dairies received the 2001 Hau Blossom Award, which honors organizations for years of support for a safe and healthy community.
