Fire officials dealt with a stubborn brush fire near Waialua that flared up yesterday afternoon, although no homes were being threatened.
The fire, which began Friday and burned 100 acres of former sugarcane and pineapple fields, reignited around 3:30 p.m. yesterday along Kaukonahua Road near the University of Hawaii Poamoho Experimental Farm. Three ground units and a fire helicopter responded to the blaze.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said one of the fires "fingers" heading toward Wahiawa flared up.
It took more than five hours on Friday to bring the blaze under control. No homes were affected, but parts of Kaukonahua Road were shut down Friday when the fire got too close to the roadside. Fire officials believe the fire began near the side of Kaukonahua Road, possibly from a cigarette discarded by a passing motorist, Soo said.
