Advertiser Staff

Coralie Simmons scored four goals as No. 2 UCLA defeated No. 8 Hawaii, 14-3, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s water polo match in Westwood, Calif.

UCLA improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the federation. The Wahine are 10-1 and 1-1.

The Bruins used an aggressive attack to score four goals in the first period and five in the second to take a 9-1 lead at the half.

Christy Bardecki scored two goals for Hawaii, which finished 3-1 on the road trip.

SOCCER

All-state player signs: Punahou attacker Charles Rania, a three-time all-state player, has signed a scholarship offer with Gonzaga University of Spokane, Wash., Gonzaga spokesman Oliver Pierce announced yesterday.

Rania was the 2000 Interscholastic League of Honolulu goal-scoring champion with 14 and had an ILH career total of 30. He was first-team all-state as a junior and second team his sophomore and senior seasons.

He has played for the Mililani Strikers Soccer Club since 1994, and was a member of age-group state championship teams three times.

Rania placed second in the 100-meter high hurdles (15.4 seconds) and third in the 300 low hurdles (39.9) in last May’s state track championships.

Gonzaga coach Einar Thorarinsson expects Rania to help replace Kamehameha graduate Brian Ching of Haleiwa as a scoring threat. Ching, now playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer, was Gonzaga’s second career point scorer with 91 and third in career goals with 34.

VOLLEYBALL

Iolani names coach: Luis Ramirez, who coached Maryknoll to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s small schools’ championship last year, has been named head boys coach at Iolani School.

Ramirez is an internationally certified coach, and also serves as the Asics Rainbow Club head coach and coordinator, where his 18-year-old age group teams have continually finished well in national level events.
