BEVERLY ANN BAKER MELUM
1/23/1940 to 10/19/2009

Age 69. Bev Melum was born Beverly Ann Baker to Mattie Hight and Lloyd George Baker Jan. 23, 1940, in Grants Pass. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Portland where her brother, Jerry, was born and the family remained. Dancing was a major theme which developed early in Bev's life. At age 4, she began dancing at the Richard Billings Dance Studio and continued until playing basketball caught her attention at age 12. She attended Duniway Elementary School and went to Cleveland High School where dancing entered her life again. During her freshman year she was invited to dance at Emery Clay's Dance Studio which led to dancing all over the Pacific Northwest, including Canada, with frequent appearances at Amato's Supper Club. Not only was Emery himself a great influence, but Bev developed many lifelong friendships. As a high school sophomore she even began teaching jazz and tap. Following graduation, Bev headed off to college which included Portland State University, University of Hawaii and San Jose State University in California. This educational experience also included 10 years of living in Hawaii, another major theme in her life. It was during these Hawaiian years that she began another theme: travel. She traveled the South Sea Islands including Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, studying and learning many native dances. During this period Bev was given a registered Hawaiian name by the Bishop Museum, a very unusual event, even in today's world. She was also the only haole to dance with a native Hawaiian dance group. These were honors that she treasured all her life. Again she made more lifelong friends. Bev received both an elementary teaching degree and a secondary degree for teaching high school and college levels. She and a friend started a promising dance studio in Portland which ended abruptly for her in 1965 when she made the evening news by falling down an elevator shaft. After a year-long recovery, she headed back to Hawaii. It was during her time teaching at Nanakuli, Hawaii, Bev met and married Gary Melum and again relocated to the Portland area where her affiliation with Jefferson High School's performing arts department flourished. She created the tap dance department. In September 1986 she took a sabbatical for two years to teach "tipi toe" in Milan, Italy. Again, another theme in her life. Learning to speak Italian on the fly, she taught at a private studio, but had the privilege of giving performances at La Scala. For several summers thereafter she was invited back to teach small classes between some other trips she took. She was constantly going somewhere-China, Indonesia, Jordan, Egypt, the Middle East, South America, all over Europe, and especially to Italy. Returning to Portland, her job again changed, as the performing arts program in Portland began to move across the river to Vancouver. During her time teaching physical education at Vancouver's Roosevelt Elementary School, she was again instrumental in helping to establish the first performing arts school in the state. In 1994 she became a grandmother when Rob, her stepson (though Bev always introduced him without the "step"), and his wife, Tina, had their first child. "I'm a grandmother!" she squealed. She eventually had four grandchildren. She loved every minute of this grand adventure and every summer she had them come to the beach with her. Finally, retirement brought a continuation of her zest for life and learning, much of it reflected in her second home at the beach in Manzanita. She loved to entertain all her friends and relatives-the more the better. This home she loved and filled it with the best parts of her life: healthy living, cooking, bird feeders, music, a room devoted to Hawaii, lavender reminders of Italy, world-wide travel mementos and books, books, books. Bev was a passionate lover of life and several mementos display her belief that "Life is Good!" She is deeply missed. A service was held on Sat, Oct. 24, 2009, in All Saints Episcopal Church 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland, OR. A Hawaii memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki, Wed, Dec 9, 2009, 11:30am followed by a scattering of ashes in the waters Bev loved.

RICHARD FRED ZOELLNER
November 22, 2009 in Sarasota Florida much beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

After a full and vibrant life, he passed away peacefully at home with his family after a mercifully brief bout with lung cancer. Dick had a storybook career with Frigidaire. He followed in his father's footsteps and began as a stockboy. Through dedication and hard work, he worked his way up through the ranks to become to Assistant General Manager of Sales in 1979. His reputation was so impeccable that he was made President of Frigidaire after the company was sold to White Consolidated in 1980. He was retained when Electrolux purchased White Consolidated in 1985. After the first phase of his career ended, he shared his sharp business acumen and experience by consulting with numerous companies and served on the board of Servco Pacific in Honolulu from 1994-2008.

His joys in life were many: his grandchildren, travel, boats, cars, baseball and anything mechanical. He was a great friend to many and never lost his knack for making someone smile. He will be missed.

He was survived by his wife of 31 years, Katherine Driscoll Zoellner; daughter, Leigh and husband George Troutman of Arlington VA; son, Gary Zoellner and wife Winnie Harris Zoellner of Falls Church, VA; daughter, Monica and husband Andy White of Poncha Springs CO; and son, Louis and wife Sarah Mellaci of Kona HI. His surviving grandchildren are Marie and Kevin Troutman, Laura Zoellner, Reece and Ison White, Willis and Hazel Mellaci.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Jan Carol Zoellner.

A service will be held in Honolulu in December. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to TideWell Hospice & Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34238.
