MPI hands 'Iolani second straight baseball loss, 12-2

Kyle Yanabu and Isaac Omura each hit home runs and Matt Inouye scored four times to lead host Mid-Pacific Institute to a 12-2 victory over 'Iolani yesterday in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

MPI's win lifts the Owls (5-2) into a second-place tie with 'Iolani in the ILH standings, a half game behind Punahou and St. Louis (both 5-1).

Omura's three-run blast in the first inning gave the Owls a 4-0 lead, and MPI led 7-0 in the second inning after RBI singles by Inouye and Kevin Khan.
'Iolani scored one run in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Jeremy Kamo, but the Owls answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, Yanabu's two-run homer being the big blow.
Kila Kaaihue's RBI single made the score 11-2 in the fourth inning, but Mid-Pacific ended the game in the fifth after Inouye scored on a throwing error with one out.

Hanohano batted 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Warriors, who are the only unbeaten team in the BIIF.
On Tuesday, Hanohano had the game-winning hit in Waiakea's 10-9 victory over crosstown rival Hilo.
Daniel Leite pitched four shut-out innings for the victory.
Morgan Kruger-Burgess went the distance in the loss, and had two RBIs to lead Kealakehe.

KALAHEO 65, MOANALUA 34: Freshman guard Bre Carson scored 18 points, all on 3-point goals, and Heather Gonsalves added 15 points to lead the Mustangs past the Menehunes in OIA East action at Kalaheo.
The Mustangs used a 9-0 run late in the second quarter to take a 37-15 halftime lead, and a 9-2 run early in the third quarter put them up 46-17. Carson made five of her 3-point baskets in the first half.
Two-time Advertiser Player of the Year Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo finished with nine points, six rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. Patti Hardimon led Moanalua with 12 points.
