Mo-ped driver killed in Kona

A mo-ped driver was killed last night after hitting a guard rail on Kuakini Highway in Puuloa, Kona, on the Big Island.

An investigation showed the victim was thrown and struck his head. He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m.

He is believed to be a visitor 35 to 40 years old. Identification is being withheld until family is notified. Anyone with information is to call Bradley Freitas of the Kona Patrol Division at 326-4646 or CrimeStoppers.

Three cars hit, pedestrian nearly struck

A 69-year-old man was in police custody today after a car he was driving allegedly struck several cars and nearly ran over a pedestrian in Kaka'ako.

Police said the driver of the gold Mitsubishi struck a car on Halekauwila Street at about 8:50 a.m. He then rear-ended an unoccupied red Mustang in the parking lot of Chaney Brooks & Co. at 606 Coral St., pushing it into bushes, police said.

Maneuvering out of the lot, the driver nearly struck a pedestrian who was trying to intervene, police said. He then collided with a black Volvo traveling on Coral Street.

The man, who has no local address, was arrested on suspicion of criminal property damage and attempted murder. Police are investigating whether the man struck the red Mustang on purpose. There were no injuries reported, police said.

Card game ends in firearm arrest

A name-calling incident during a family card game escalated into an alleged handgun confrontation yesterday in Waipahu.

Police said a 62-year-old man was playing cards with his relatives at 5:30 p.m. on Nali'i Street when someone called him crazy. The man left and returned with a gun.

His cousin, worried someone might get hurt, took the handgun away.The man was arrested on suspicion of firearm offenses.
