Fads and Finds
Adorn your car with a local treat

First there was the Unocal 76 antenna ball. Then there was the Jack ball and its party cousin from Jack in the Box.

Now the antenna ball has gone local in the form of a musubi. The first design is adorned simply with an ume, the second is a hula musubi and the third, in the final design stage, wears a kimono.

My Little Musubi is the creation of Pam Seeney and Kim Kono of The Design Group. They're the team that made LinenWear in a shop in Manoa from 1993 until last year.

"We thought we would do something fun, not clothing," Seeney said. "We burned out on clothing." However, the team is still producing uniforms. Their latest project is for employees at the new Kunia Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Why musubi? "We wanted something humorous, local and recognizable in shape," Seeney said.

A package of two ume musubi sells for $5. Hula musubi are two for $6, while musume musubi (in kimono) with a suction cup to place on a computer or mirror is $5 for one.

The antenna balls made their debut at the Ben Franklin Koko Marina Craft Fair Saturday. They're available at craft fairs: Mililani High School's fair on April 14, the Okinawan Center Craft Fair on April 29 and May 5 at Kuhio School. E-mail orders can be sent to: dsgngrp@lava.net.
