Missing fishing boat skipper listed as from Hawai'i

Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska The skipper of the fishing vessel Arctic Rose which is missing in Alaskan waters with 15 people on board is Dave Rundall of Hawai'i, according to a list from the Seattle-based industry group Groundfish Forum.

The Coast Guard said it picked up the signal of an emergency locator beacon from the 92-foot vessel owned by Arctic Sole Seafoods of Seattle early yesterday, but said there was no distress call.

The body of one crew member was recovered yesterday.

The Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star was at the scene early today with the cutter Boutwell.

Searchers have so far spotted an oily sheen, an empty life raft and six survival suits in the area about 775 miles southwest of Anchorage, the Coast Guard said.

The loss appears to be the worst fishing disaster in Alaskan waters since 1982 when the Japanese trawler Akebono Maru capsized 50 miles north of Adak, killing 32 people.
